Growing up between cultures shapes who you become — for life.

The term Third Culture Kid traces back to sociologist Ruth Hill Useem, whose research — beginning in the 1950s and continuing through her career at Michigan State University — gave the field its founding vocabulary. A TCK is a child who spends a significant part of their formative years outside their parents' passport culture, building connections to multiple cultures without full ownership of any single one.

That framework was later expanded into the field's standard reference, Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Among Worlds by David C. Pollock and Ruth E. Van Reken — the book I draw on, alongside my own doctoral research and 18 years in HR and leadership.
